“Being an older athlete, Paul still helped me push start times in the top 7 on the World Cup tour.”
— Deanna Panting, Canada Skeleton Team, World Cup Medalist
Potentia was founded by Paul Balsom – a performance consultant with almost 30 years experience working across more than 20 different sports at national or professional level including support for world and Olympic champions. Head of performance for one professional and two national teams, and performance director for one of Canada’s largest independent performance centres. Applied researcher investigating motor control, coordination and posture over the sprint initial acceleration phase, the first few steps so critical in sports performance, Paul has established a reputation for solving obscure performance and injury problems, for getting results.
Supporting coaches, athletes, and sports organisations with a person first strategy to enhance sporting performance from an individual movement proficiency and athletic capacity perspective.
The key to identifying training solutions in power speed sports is a specialist understanding of power speed movement strategy requirements.
Representing Great Britain in bobsleigh and competing in rugby and athletics at first class level allowed Paul access to multiple coaches and performance experts. However, as for so many, the journey to finding effective physical performance solutions was too long and too slow.
The journey and the discoveries made served as inspiration to make a difference for others. After working as a Head of Strength and Conditioning in the English rugby premiership Paul sought to gain knowledge and experience by moving to North America. Lucky enough to work with some of the biggest names in sport, and to gain invaluable experience and knowledge working with multiple world class coaches across different sports, the desire to make a difference and continue to get better only grows stronger.
Some of the teams and organisations we have worked with.
Phil Vickery, Trevor Woodman | England Rugby World Cup Champions
Sheldon Rempal | NHL, LA Kings
Jan Hudec, Paul Balsom | Alpine Ski Olympic Medalist
Joel Greenshields | Olympic Swimmer
Coordination is central to Paul’s research and training approach. Understanding coordination, how it affects generation and direction of force, and its transference from training tasks to performance is critical in order to optimize results. However, this aspect of sport science has been inexplicably overlooked in performance circles, until now.
PCM-trained athletes show dramatically improved performance in agility and acceleration, more power and better posture in contact sports, greater sprint repeatability, improved skill development that translates to shooting and passing power and accuracy, and significantly reduced injury rates.

The maximum velocities of the gazelle and cheetah are similar. Yet while the gazelle can maintain maximum velocity for far longer, the cheetah has dramatically superior acceleration ability - no contest.
